After the battle, courage means being honest with yourself and using all the tools available to reclaim your life with dignity, honor, and redemption.

There are many tactics of achieving the goal of recovery and healing. During Duty to HealTM, we draw strength from each other and share challenging conversations and experiences. This tour into the soul requires more than just getting in touch with feelings about what happened or simply sharing old war stories together. It requires probing moral injuries, a type of trauma that occurs when a person’s core values or moral beliefs are betrayed by themselves or others. Our tour also involves engaging in drills that facilitate grieving and our leaning into the power of God and His saving words of peace, reconciliation, and healing.

Our retreats create a sacred place to address these challenges. This is an expedition to end the isolation by bringing warriors together to become part of an intensive healing unit of community and support. The program integrates the past’s unspeakable moments within a spiritual process that recognizes the moral anguish we have grappled with.

Through our discussions and activities, we learn to identify the specific burdens and triggers that continue to rob us of a sense of safety. We provide a context for the sacred work of grief, where everyone is invited to mourn and honor the loss of life, as well as the personal costs that were sacrificed in combat.

Indeed, all troops are trained in eliminating the enemy—and taking another human life is the greatest trauma we can experience. During the retreat, we reconcile what happened as we carefully edge our souls away from the brink of any self-destructive fallout borne from violence and suffering.

With the grace of God, we transform any inner corruption that was the price of our own survival into compassion and forgiveness. Hearts are restored with courage by stepping into the truth of our experience. This journey helps us regain our highest held values. From destroyer to protector, we move from seclusion to becoming valuable community leaders and teachers with life wisdom and blessings for others.

Duty to HealTM is led by a professionally trained team that comprises mostly veterans who are therapists, and pastors who accompany each group through this healing journey.

Our retreat training center and current retreats are held in the Houston area and are sponsored by New Heart of Texas.

Contact Us

If you or someone you love has suffered from serving in the military or as a first responder, you can experience strength and healing.
